In 2010 the movie Despicable Me was released and in this movie a book is featured that is being read to some of the main characters. In that same year, a physical copy of that book was published that looks very much like the edition in the movie, even with the moveable pluche kittens. The book is called Sleepy Kittens and is written by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio and illustrated by Eric Guillon.
The book tells the story of three little kittens who need to go to bed according to their mother, but who really do not want to do so. The mother cat says that that's all fine, but she does ask the kittens to drink their milk and listen to her song etcetera. All those sleep-inducing activities make sure that by the end of the story the kittens do feel tired and even fall asleep.
It is a simple and short story, but it is a very sweet one. The story that is being told is enjoyable for smaller readers or maybe listeners, because they will probably be able to recognize themselves in it and they might recognize the entire process of getting ready for bed. The story is also very funny for the adult reader, because they are most likely trying to do the same with the children who they're reading the story for as the mother tried to do with the kittens: making them fall asleep. The text is written very rhythmically, which makes this book a really good one to read aloud, because then the rhyme and rhythm come across best and make the book even cuter than it already is.
The illustrations in Sleepy Kittens are adorable. On almost every spread the three kittens are present, who are almost round because they're so fat and fluffy and they all have a different brightly colored fur. Moreover, their eyes are huge, which makes them even more adorable. The illustrations add to the text, because solely based on the text it might not be entirely clear that the kittens have fallen asleep, but that does become clear when one looks at the illustrations.
However, the best thing about this book is probably the fact that three 3D kittens are attached to the top of it. One can put ones fingers in these kittens in order to make them move and let them play out the story. That way, the reader can let the kittens drink from the bowl of milk that is visible in the book.
All in all, Sleepy Kittens is an adorable little book, that is a lot of fun to read aloud for young children, mainly because of the kittens that come with it and that can play out the story, giving this book a little extra schwung, so to say.
